Description

The Mattress Developed Specifically for Side Sleepers

Schramm describes the Mythos Mattress as a fixture at the absolute top of their range — a handcrafted German masterpiece that sits alongside the Divina as one of Schramm’s two flagship mattresses. Where the Divina sets new standards in overall comfort and spring complexity, the Mythos was developed with a specific and deliberate focus: it is Schramm’s mattress engineered from the ground up for side sleepers, featuring the patented Schramm shoulder zone as its defining ergonomic centrepiece.

Thermal Furnace-Tempered Pocket Springs — Worldwide Unique, Top of the Schramm Range

Like the Divina, the Mythos uses Schramm’s thermal furnace-tempered pocket springs — the worldwide unique technology that places these mattresses above all standard spring alternatives.

Each spring is slowly heated in an industrial furnace to very high temperatures and slowly cooled after winding — permanently altering the molecular structure of the steel to produce a spring with a significantly stronger reset force, a mechanical memory, and permanent elasticity. Furnace-tempered springs are fatigue-resistant and not subject to wear, maintaining their support and dynamics across the full lifespan of the mattress without progressive tension loss.

Each spring is a 6-coil design, individually hand-sewn into its own cotton pocket — approximately 500 springs per 100x200cm — with no adhesives used at any point. The spring core uses 5 different tension formulas along the longitudinal axis of the mattress — calibrated to provide an even force progression across the body’s varying weight distribution from head to toe. Five spring combinations are available to match body weight:

  • Combination 1: up to approx. 55kg
  • Combination 2: approx. 50–75kg
  • Combination 3: approx. 65–90kg
  • Combination 4: approx. 80–125kg
  • Combination 5: from approx. 120kg

Patented Schramm Shoulder Zone (1990) — Precision Engineering for Side Sleepers

The Mythos’s defining feature is Schramm’s patented shoulder zone, first developed in 1990 and refined across three decades of production experience.

In the shoulder area of the spring core, Schramm uses springs with reduced tension in combination with a highly elastic cotton ticking — a precise reduction in spring resistance specifically in the zone where side sleepers generate the most problematic upward pressure on the shoulder joint. This allows the shoulder to dive gently and naturally into the mattress surface, relieving joint pressure, allowing the arm and shoulder muscles to fully relax, and enabling correct cervical and thoracic spinal alignment in the lateral sleeping position.

The result is what Schramm describes with precision: support that is highly elastic rather than simply soft, strong but not uncomfortably tight. The shoulder sinks as it should — without the rest of the body following it into an unsupported compression. This combination of targeted softness and overall firmness is the mechanical challenge that the patented shoulder zone solves.

Talalay Latex, Silk, Linen and Virgin Wool — Noble Natural Padding

The Mythos padding builds on a Talalay natural latex base — certified to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 — which provides its characteristic point-elastic, naturally antibacterial foundation. Above the latex, a softer top padding layer uses silk and linen — silk for its bidirectional thermal regulation and surface smoothness, linen for its exceptional breathability and moisture management. Pure new wool and additional natural fibres complete the padding system. Kapok is available on request.

All padding layers are joined by Schramm’s handcrafted blind tacking — no adhesives at any point — preserving the dimensional stability, breathability, and natural material properties of every layer.

FAQ:

Q: How does the Schramm Mythos differ from the Schramm Divina — both are at the top of the range?

Both the Mythos and the Divina sit at the absolute top of Schramm’s mattress range — sharing the same thermal furnace-tempered spring technology, the same handcrafted German manufactory construction, the same blind tacking without adhesives, and the same commitment to exclusively natural materials. At the spring level and construction philosophy, they are equals.

The distinction is one of specific orientation and padding character.

The Divina was developed as Schramm’s supreme expression of overall comfort — using 9-coil springs for the finest possible movement dynamics, and the most complex multi-layer natural padding system available: linen, silk, pure new virgin wool, lyocell, and Talalay latex in a layering that represents five years of development. It is the mattress for those who want the absolute pinnacle of natural sleeping luxury regardless of sleeping position.

The Mythos was developed specifically and deliberately for side sleepers — integrating the patented shoulder zone as its defining ergonomic feature. Its padding uses Talalay latex as a main base with silk and linen as the top layer — a refined and luxurious combination, but with a different sensory character to the Divina. The Mythos uses 6-coil springs— the same permanently elastic furnace-tempered quality as the Divina, but with slightly less fine-grained movement differentiation.

For a side sleeper who experiences shoulder discomfort, disrupted circulation, or regular repositioning during the night, the Mythos’s patented shoulder zone makes it the more ergonomically targeted choice. For a back sleeper or combination sleeper seeking the most comprehensively natural and luxurious sleeping surface available, the Divina is unmatched.

Q: What specifically does the patented Schramm shoulder zone do that a standard mattress cannot achieve?

The shoulder zone solves a specific biomechanical problem that standard uniform-tension mattresses cannot address without compromise.

In a standard spring mattress, all springs across the surface use the same or broadly similar tension. For a side sleeper, this means the springs under the shoulder — the widest and heaviest contact point in the lateral position — provide the same resistance as springs under lighter body parts. This creates upward pressure on the shoulder joint: the shoulder cannot sink into the surface naturally, so the joint is effectively compressed upward throughout the night. The resulting restriction of blood circulation, tension in the shoulder and neck muscles, and postural misalignment is what causes side sleepers to wake with shoulder stiffness, tightness, or the need to reposition frequently.

The patented shoulder zone addresses this by using springs with specifically reduced tension in the shoulder area, combined with a highly elastic cotton ticking that provides additional lateral flexibility in that zone. The shoulder sinks naturally into the surface without resistance — allowing the joint to decompress, the muscles to release, and the spine to maintain correct lateral alignment from cervical to thoracic without compromise.

Crucially, this targeted reduction in spring tension does not compromise support elsewhere — the surrounding and underlying spring zones maintain their normal differentiated tension, so the rest of the body remains correctly supported while the shoulder is accommodated. This is the ergonomic precision that a standard mattress — however high quality — cannot replicate without a dedicated patented engineering solution.

Q: Schramm recommends pairing the Mythos with a Schramm base mattress — is this necessary, and what does the base add?

Using the Mythos with a Schramm base mattress is strongly recommended rather than strictly necessary — but the system performance with a base mattress is meaningfully different from the Mythos used on a standard slatted frame or box spring.

Schramm’s base mattresses are themselves spring-loaded — not simple wooden platforms or generic box springs. The base contains independently calibrated springs that absorb and distribute the energy transferred from the top mattress during sleep, providing an additional layer of dynamic response beneath the Mythos’s own spring system. The interaction between the top and base spring systems creates what Schramm calls a “synergy effect” — the combined system adapts more precisely and more completely to the sleeper’s body than either component alone.

On a standard slatted frame, the Mythos performs as an excellent mattress on its own terms — but the potential of its 5-zone spring differentiation and patented shoulder zone is not fully realised without the complementary spring dynamics of the base. For those investing in the Mythos, experiencing it in our showroom on a matched Schramm base is the best way to understand the complete performance of the system. Q: The Schramm Mythos is Schramm’s most expensive mattress at Sleep Gallery — what precisely justifies this investment?

The Mythos sits at the very top of the Schramm range and the investment reflects the convergence of everything that makes Schramm’s manufacturing unique.

Thermal furnace-tempered springs — the worldwide unique technology — applied to approximately 500 individually hand-sewn pocket springs per mattress. The patented shoulder zone, first developed in 1990 and continuously refined, requires individual calibration of spring tensions across the mattress construction — a precision that cannot be standardised or automated. Five spring tension formulas means every Mythos is built to a specific individual specification rather than mass-produced to a single specification.

Talalay natural latex, silk, linen, pure new wool, and lyocell — the full spectrum of Schramm’s premium natural padding materials — layered and joined by blind tacking without any adhesives. At 25cm in height, the Mythos contains significant material depth, every layer of which reflects a deliberate natural material choice.

Handmade in Germany by a fourth-generation family manufactory founded in 1923, with a century of accumulated craft expertise that is visible at every stage of construction. Schramm is repeatedly ranked among Germany’s leading luxury brands — alongside names like Montblanc, A. Lange & Söhne, and Mercedes-AMG — reflecting the cultural and quality standing that the manufactory has earned over 100 years.

For a side sleeper who has not yet experienced a Schramm mattress with the patented shoulder zone, the difference on the first night is often described as immediately transformative. A mattress that actively solves a specific ergonomic problem every single night — rather than simply providing a comfortable surface — represents an investment in sleep quality that has measurable long-term benefits for health, recovery, and wellbeing.
