The Moosburger G2-RS is a standard-format rectangular pillow with a fundamental difference from every other pillow in its category. It contains two separate removable inner cushions — one filling 2/3 of the total volume, one filling 1/3.
This gives you three distinct configurations from a single pillow. Use only the smaller cushion for a soft, lower profile. Use only the larger cushion for a medium, supportive feel. Use both together for a firm, fully filled pillow.
Furthermore, the two-sided zipper runs along two edges of the cover — making it genuinely easy to access, remove, and replace the inner cushions without effort.
RS Horsehair Fill — Natural, Resilient, Breathable
The G2-RS is filled with RS-grade horsehair — combed, cleaned, and processed entirely in-house at Moosburger’s facility in Hörbranz, Austria.
RS horsehair is tightly twisted during processing and then untwisted and combed by hand to maximise elasticity and volume. The result is a fill that springs back under pressure rather than compressing flat. Unlike foam or synthetic fills, the hair maintains its structure and loft throughout the night.
Moreover, natural horsehair creates continuous air channels throughout both inner cushions. Air circulates freely, keeping the pillow cool and dry regardless of the ambient temperature. As a result, the G2-RS is one of the few pillows that performs equally well in summer and winter without any adjustment.
GOTS-Certified Organic Cotton — Unbleached, Undyed
The outer cover is made from 100% organically grown cotton, certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). It is unbleached and undyed — containing no synthetic finishing agents or chemical treatments of any kind.
Consequently, the G2-RS is suitable for people with skin sensitivities, eczema, psoriasis, and neurodermatitis — conditions that often react to the chemical residues present in conventionally processed textiles.
The outer cover is machine washable at 60°C. The inner cushions can be washed separately at 30°C.
A Pillow That Grows With You
The G2-RS was designed to adapt over time. It can be used initially with just one inner cushion — as a softer option for lighter sleepers or younger users. Both cushions can be added later as firmness preferences change.
Furthermore, after 7 to 10 years of use, Moosburger can renovate the fill — cleaning and re-combing the hair to restore its original volume and performance. The pillow is therefore not a disposable product but a long-term sleep investment.

How does the two-cushion system work and why does it matter?
The G2-RS contains two separate horsehair-filled inner cushions housed inside one outer cover. The larger cushion accounts for 2/3 of the total fill volume. The smaller accounts for the remaining 1/3. This gives you three usable configurations without buying three different pillows. Start with the smaller cushion alone for a soft, lower feel. Add the larger cushion for a firmer, fuller result. Use both together for the maximum fill.
Furthermore, being able to remove the inner cushions makes washing the outer cover straightforward — there is no need to handle a heavy, fully-filled pillow case. The two-sided zipper is accessible from both directions, so inserting and removing the cushions takes seconds.
Which sleeping positions does the G2-RS suit?
The G2-RS suits side sleepers and back sleepers. Its rectangular format and adjustable fill make it adaptable to both positions. Side sleepers typically need a higher, firmer pillow to bridge the gap between shoulder and head and keep the cervical spine aligned. Using both inner cushions provides this. Back sleepers generally need a lower profile. Using only the smaller cushion, or removing some fill from the inner cushions, reduces the height accordingly.
Stomach sleepers are less well served by any supportive pillow. If you sleep primarily on your stomach, a very flat pillow or no pillow at all is generally recommended regardless of fill material.
How does horsehair keep a pillow cool throughout the night?
Natural horsehair has a hollow, spring-like structure. When compressed under the weight of your head, the individual hairs flex and create air gaps rather than sealing together. This means air flows continuously through the pillow during sleep. Heat from your head dissipates through the fill rather than building up at the contact surface. As a result, the G2-RS does not develop the warm, stuffy feeling that foam, latex, and many synthetic fills produce after an hour or two of use.
The same airflow prevents moisture accumulation. Moosburger describes this as a constant dry-climate effect — the environment inside the pillow remains too dry for dust mites to establish themselves, which is a significant practical benefit for allergy sufferers.
Why does a horsehair pillow cost significantly more than a standard pillow?
Three factors drive the price: the material, the production, and the lifespan. Natural horsehair is a limited raw material that requires labour-intensive processing — collecting, washing, steaming, combing, and quality-grading before it is suitable for bedding. Moosburger carries out every step of this process in-house at their Austrian facility, using techniques refined over five generations. This level of vertical integration cannot be replicated at a mass-market price point.
Furthermore, the G2-RS is handmade. Each inner cushion is filled individually, the cover is cut and sewn from certified organic cotton, and the two-sided zipper system is fitted by hand. The lifespan makes the cost rational. A standard synthetic pillow typically needs replacing every one to two years. The G2-RS will perform well for 7 to 10 years before renovation is needed — at which point the hair fill can be cleaned and restored rather than discarded. On a cost-per-year basis, the difference is considerably smaller than the purchase price suggests.
Can I use a standard pillowcase with the G2-RS?
Yes. The G2-RS is sized at 50×70 cm, which is a standard European pillow dimension. Any standard pillowcase in this size fits directly over the outer cover.
However, Moosburger produces purpose-made covers for all their pillows — cut from GOTS-certified organic cotton and designed to contain the horsehair fill without allowing individual hairs to work through. If you plan to use a standard decorative pillowcase on top, it is worth considering a Moosburger cover as the base layer to protect the fill and keep the outer case clean longer.
