Description

A Family Manufactory, Not a Factory

For over 40 years the Falkenreck family has been making exclusive duvets in Rietberg, a small town on the edge of the Teutoburg Forest. Every duvet that leaves the atelier is made by hand — around 400 work steps are required for a single down duvet, from cutting and sewing the fabric to filling the chambers and closing every seam individually. This is not a brand that makes duvets at scale. It is a family business where the same craftswomen have been applying the same methods for decades, and the difference is immediately apparent when you hold the finished product.

850 CUIN Newfoundland Goose Down

The Diamond All Season is filled with 100% pure white Newfoundland goose down at 850 CUIN fill power. CUIN — cubic inches per ounce — is the standard measure of down quality: it describes how much volume a given weight of down occupies when fully lofted. At 850 CUIN, this is among the highest fill power commercially available anywhere in the world. The practical effect is a duvet that achieves exceptional insulation at a fraction of the weight of lower-grade alternatives — the fill can be as light as 380g for a single size while still providing genuine all-season warmth.

The down is sourced from Newfoundland, Canada, where the natural lakes and meadows form the original habitat and natural feeding ground for the geese. Falkenreck visits the farms personally and at regular intervals to verify that sustainable farming practices are maintained.

Swiss Fine Batiste Cover with 2cm Inner Baffle

The cover is 100% cotton, 198er Swiss fine batiste — a tightly woven, down-proof fabric that allows excellent moisture transport and air circulation. A 2cm inner baffle gives the filling sufficient space to fully expand, insulate body warmth, and prevents the down from shifting between chambers. Each chamber is individually sealed with an exceptionally fine stitch — a detail only achievable by hand that ensures no down migrates between chambers or escapes through seams over years of use.

Genuinely All-Season

The Diamond All Season carries a warmth rating of 2 out of 4 — designed for sleepers who prefer a constant room temperature and want a light duvet that works year-round. The exceptional fill power means the duvet regulates temperature in both directions: cooling in summer by wicking moisture away efficiently, warming in winter by trapping body heat in the expanded down clusters. For most sleepers in a normally heated bedroom, this single duvet replaces the need for seasonal alternatives entirely.

FAQ

What makes Newfoundland goose down different from standard European goose down?

Geography and climate determine down quality in ways that are difficult to replicate through breeding or farming alone. Newfoundland’s natural lakes and meadows provide the original habitat and natural feeding ground for the geese — the cold Canadian climate forces the birds to develop larger, denser down clusters as a survival mechanism, producing fill with exceptional loft and insulating efficiency. This is why Newfoundland down consistently tests at fill powers above 800 CUIN, a benchmark that most European and Asian down sources do not reach. The difference is measurable: at 850 CUIN, less fill is needed per duvet to achieve the same warmth level, keeping the Diamond All Season remarkably light relative to its thermal performance.

What does the 2cm inner baffle actually do, and why does it matter?

A baffle is a fabric wall sewn between the top and bottom layers of a duvet chamber that gives the down space to expand vertically rather than being compressed flat. Without a baffle, the top and bottom cover fabrics are stitched directly together — the chambers are flat, the down is restricted, and cold zones form where the seam lines compress the fill. Falkenreck’s 2cm inner baffle allows the filling to fully expand, isolate body warmth, and prevents the down from shifting. Combined with individually sealed chambers and hand-stitched seams, the construction ensures the duvet maintains consistent loft and warmth distribution across the entire surface — no cold spots, no thin patches, no down migration over time.

Can the Diamond All Season genuinely replace both a summer and a winter duvet?

For most sleepers in a normally heated bedroom — which describes the majority of Tbilisi apartments from October through April — yes. The 850 CUIN fill power means the down regulates effectively in both directions: in warmer months it wicks moisture away quickly without trapping heat, and in cooler months the lofted clusters trap enough body warmth to remain comfortable without a heavier winter weight. Falkenreck describes the Diamond All Season as ideal for “balanced” sleepers — those who don’t feel the cold until temperatures genuinely drop, and who don’t overheat easily in summer. If you sleep particularly cold or particularly hot, a single-season weight may serve you better — our consultants at Sleep Gallery can advise based on your specific thermal preferences.

Why does a handmade German duvet justify its price over mass-produced alternatives?

Around 400 work steps go into every Falkenreck duvet — each chamber individually filled, each seam individually closed by hand. Mass-produced duvets are machine-filled and machine-sewn at high speed: the chambers are never perfectly even, the seams are never as tight, and the down begins to migrate through needle holes and seam gaps within months. A Falkenreck duvet made this way holds its fill distribution, its loft, and its warmth performance for many years — potentially decades — because the craftsmanship that went into it is structural rather than cosmetic. The Falkenreck Diamond All Season also carries 850 CUIN Newfoundland fill, one of the most expensive raw materials in duvet production. The price reflects both the material and the hours of skilled labour — neither of which can be reduced without changing the product fundamentally.
