Description
The Only Protector That Thermoregulates and Waterproofs Simultaneously
The Velfont Alaska Mattress Protector occupies a unique position in the Velfont range — and in the mattress protector market as a whole. It is the only product in Velfont’s collection that combines Outlast® NASA-developed thermoregulating technology with a Neotherm® waterproof breathable membrane in a single protector. Every other Velfont thermoregulating protector (the Frost and Igloo) is non-waterproof. Every other Velfont waterproof protector (the Vital and Aura) does not thermoregulate. The Alaska is the sole product where both technologies are present simultaneously — making it the natural choice for those who need full mattress protection from liquid AND active temperature management throughout the night.
Outlast® Thermoregulating Cotton — NASA PCM Technology
The Alaska’s top fabric is 100% Outlast® thermoregulating cotton — the same NASA-developed phase change material (PCM) technology found in the Frost protector and Fresh fitted sheet. Natural wax PCM microcapsules printed onto 100% cotton react to body temperature by transitioning between solid and liquid states:
When body temperature rises — the PCM microcapsules melt, absorbing the excess heat as latent energy and preventing the temperature build-up at the skin surface that triggers night sweating and sleep disruption.
When body temperature drops — the solidifying microcapsules release the stored heat back toward the body, buffering the temperature drop.
This continuous cycle creates a constant, individualised microclimate at the sleeping surface — neither too hot nor too cold — for the full duration of the night. The thermoregulating properties are wash-resistant, dermatologically tested, and certified by the Space Foundation, which recognises Outlast® as the only textile technology with proactive thermal management credentials.
The bottom fabric is 100% super soft cotton — providing a natural, breathable, soft surface on the mattress side that complements the thermoregulating performance of the top layer.
Neotherm® Waterproof Breathable Membrane — Full Protection Without Compromise
The Alaska’s Neotherm® polyurethane membrane provides complete waterproof protection — 100% resistance to liquid penetration — while maintaining genuine breathability through its molecular structure that allows water vapour to pass freely while blocking liquid water.
This is Velfont’s own proprietary membrane, described as the most breathable waterproof membrane on the market. Its vapour-permeable construction means perspiration generated during sleep escapes as vapour through the protector — preventing the trapped heat and sweating effect associated with basic impermeable membranes. The Neotherm® membrane physically blocks dust mites from passing between the mattress and the sleeping surface above.
The Alaska fits mattresses up to 40cm deep — the deepest mattress height in the Velfont protector range, accommodating thick boxspring mattresses, mattress-plus-topper combinations, and high-profile memory foam models.
Why the Combination Matters — Thermoregulation and Waterproofing Together
The two technologies in the Alaska address different sleep hygiene challenges, and addressing both from a single layer rather than two separate products has specific practical advantages.
Most heat-sensitive sleepers who experience night sweats face a dilemma with standard waterproof protectors: the waterproof membrane, however breathable, adds thermal resistance compared to a non-waterproof fabric. This can worsen the very sweating problem the sleeper is trying to manage. Standard thermoregulating protectors solve the sweating but leave the mattress vulnerable to liquid damage.
The Alaska resolves this by applying Outlast® temperature management to proactively reduce the conditions that cause sweating in the first place — reducing the thermal load at the skin surface — while the Neotherm® membrane handles any residual liquid protection requirement. The result is a protector that is simultaneously more breathable than a standard waterproof protector (because Outlast® reduces the perspiration volume that reaches the membrane) and more protective than a non-waterproof thermoregulating protector.
The Complete Velfont Outlast® System
The Alaska can anchor the full Velfont thermoregulating system on the mattress layer. Pairing the Alaska (thermoregulating + waterproof mattress protector) with the Fresh fitted sheet (Outlast® thermoregulating cotton sheet above) creates a complete system where active temperature management operates at both the mattress protection level and the skin-contact surface level — with full waterproof protection for the mattress built in.

FAQ (EN):
Q: How is the Alaska different from the Frost and Igloo — why does the waterproofing matter?
The Frost, Igloo, and Alaska all use Outlast® thermoregulating cotton and deliver the same NASA PCM temperature management. The difference is the Neotherm® waterproof membrane present only in the Alaska — and for many sleepers this distinction determines which product is appropriate.
The Frost and Igloo are non-waterproof: they offer maximum breathability and thermoregulation but no liquid protection. They are the right choice for those whose sole priority is temperature management and for whom liquid protection is not a concern.
The Alaska adds the Neotherm® waterproof breathable membrane to the same Outlast® thermoregulating fabric. This makes it the correct choice for: those who need full mattress protection (from spills, nocturnal accidents, or accumulated perspiration volume); those protecting a premium mattress whose warranty may require a waterproof protector; those with young children or pets sharing the sleeping environment; and heat-sensitive sleepers who also need liquid protection and do not want to sacrifice thermoregulation for it.
The Alaska fits mattresses up to 40cm deep — deeper than the Frost’s 35cm — making it specifically suitable for boxspring mattresses and deep mattress-plus-topper combinations.

Q: Does the Neotherm® membrane reduce the effectiveness of the Outlast® thermoregulation in the Alaska?
This is the central technical question for the Alaska — and the honest answer is that the Neotherm® membrane adds some resistance to vapour transmission compared to a membrane-free fabric, but Velfont’s engineering specifically minimises this effect.
The Neotherm® membrane is specifically engineered for maximum breathability — Velfont describes it as the most breathable waterproof membrane on the market. Its polyurethane molecular structure allows water vapour molecules to pass through while blocking liquid water. This means the bulk of perspiration vapour generated during sleep does escape through the membrane rather than accumulating.
Critically, the Outlast® thermoregulating cotton surface works proactively to reduce the amount of heat and perspiration generated in the first place — by absorbing excess body heat before it builds up to the threshold that triggers sweating. This means the membrane needs to handle less vapour load than it would without the Outlast® treatment, because the Outlast® system is already reducing the sweat source.
The combination is therefore designed to complement rather than contradict: Outlast® reduces heat build-up, and Neotherm® handles any residual vapour and liquid protection. The result is meaningfully more comfortable than a standard waterproof protector with no thermoregulation, even if marginally less breathable than the non-waterproof Frost in pure vapour-permeability terms.

Q: Is the Alaska suitable for use on premium memory foam and TEMPUR® mattresses?
Yes — the Alaska is suitable and well-suited for memory foam and TEMPUR® mattresses, for two specific reasons.
First, the 40cm depth capacity: TEMPUR® and premium memory foam mattresses often run deeper than standard spring mattresses — particularly those using high-profile comfort layers or those combined with a topper. The Alaska’s 40cm maximum depth is the deepest in the Velfont range and accommodates the full profile of TEMPUR® Pro, Prima, and PRO Luxe models even with their comfort layers, as well as mattress-plus-topper configurations.
Second, the thermoregulating cotton surface is specifically well-matched to memory foam and TEMPUR® materials. These foam types are temperature-sensitive — they respond to body warmth by softening and conforming. Anything placed over them that traps heat can accelerate this softening effect and alter the feel of the mattress. The Outlast® thermoregulating surface actively manages the heat transfer between the sleeper and the mattress below — moderating the thermal load that reaches the foam rather than amplifying it.
The Neotherm® membrane protects the mattress from perspiration and liquid, maintaining the foam’s structural integrity over time. A waterproof protector is particularly important for premium foam mattresses because moisture penetration into the comfort layers is one of the primary causes of premature foam degradation.
Q: The Velfont Alaska costs more than standard waterproof mattress protectors — what justifies the price?
The price reflects the combination of two distinct premium technologies in a single product — each of which carries its own material and engineering cost premium over a standard waterproof cotton protector.
First, the Outlast® thermoregulating PCM treatment: a NASA-developed, Space Foundation certified technology applied to 100% cotton fabric — with its associated licensing and application cost — that actively manages body temperature throughout the night. No standard waterproof protector includes this.
Second, the Neotherm® waterproof breathable membrane: Velfont’s own proprietary membrane engineered for maximum vapour permeability alongside full liquid impermeability. No standard thermoregulating protector includes this.
A standard waterproof cotton protector offers liquid protection and basic cotton breathability. A standard thermoregulating protector offers temperature management without liquid protection. The Alaska offers both simultaneously — the only product in Velfont’s range and among very few in the broader market to do so. This engineering combination justifies a price above either technology alone.
OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certification, 40cm depth capacity, Spanish manufacturing by Velfont since 1971, and free delivery in Tbilisi complete the specification.
